Snooker Progress at Fujairah and the Knockout Stage Draw

Teenager Hero

Playing with a cracked cue, teenager Khalid Kamali followed the footsteps of UAE stars Mohammed Al Joakar and Mohammed Shehab into the knockout stages of the 13-nation Second West Asian Championships at the Concorde Fujairah hotel on Sunday.

After Al Joakar and Shehab had already been assured of places in the last 16 stage of the snooker singles competition, Kamali recovered from an earlier setback on the opening day on Saturday with a convincing 4-1 victory over Abdullah Al Rais of Oman to qualify from Group B.

Top of Group D

Al Joakar topped the Group D standings following a 4-0 hammering of Hani Kanan of Palestine on Sunday. Al Joakar did not drop a single frame on course during his march to the last 16 stage.

Top of Group A

Shehab, the defending champion and top seed, delivered a break of 86 to rout Mubarak Khalid of Kuwait 4-0 and finished on top of the Group A standings,

Kamali Superb

The young Kamali had suffered a 4-2 loss at the hands of last runner-up Ahmed Saif on Saturday, but he played a superb game in his next encounter as he outwitted Al Rais in every department of the sport.

Kamali said: "I am glad to have qualified. In the first match, it was a mixture of bad luck and a lack of experience playing under pressure that resulted in the loss to Ahmed Saif.

"Ahmed Saif has been around for a long time and he carries a formidable reputation so when the score went 2-2, I cracked.”

"And it wasn't also that as at the beginning of the match my cue had cracked as well. It was difficult for me to cue properly and I couldn't play my game.

"I used the same cue against Al Rais but this time I was relaxed in the knowledge that nobody would blame me for not making an effort."

4th UAE Player

The fourth UAE player Abdur Rahman Saif was to play in-form Syrian Omar Alkojah late on Sunday evening in a match that decide the winner and runner-up of the Group H as both of them have already made it to the knockout stages of the tournament.

Disappointment for Iran

Reigning world amateur snooker champion Hossein Vafaei of Iran was disappointing on Sunday after as he struggle to score a 4-3 victory over Ali Abdul Mohsen of Iraq. Vafaei topped the Group E standing with Mohammed Al Shaikh of Bahrain taking second place.

Habib Subah of Bahrain, whose 132-point break is the highest of the tournament so far, and Ehsan Hyderi of Iran had also topped their respective groups and qualified for the last 16 stage.

13 Nations Competing

Top players from the 13 West Asian nations are competing for gold medals in the snooker singles, snooker team, 8- and 9-ball pool singles events.

The participating countries are Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Yemen and the hosts United Arab Emirates.

9 Ball Pool

On Monday, the 9-ball pool final will be played at 7 pm, while snooker singles last round matches are scheduled to start at 10 am and will be followed by the quarter-finals at 7 pm at the same venue.

This press release has been written by Hanif Hassan, UAEBSA International.

Al Joakar Leads at Second West Asian Snooker Champs at Fujairah Concorde Hotel

While the leading contenders at the Second West Asian Championships lived up to their billings on the opening day on Saturday, UAE's Mohammed Shehab struggled to cross the first hurdle at the Concorde Fujairah Hotel.

Setting the pace at the tournament, which is being sponsored by Club Apparel, was none other than host country's experienced Mohammed Al Joakar, who started his campaign with a resounding 4-0 triumph over Mahmoud Shehab of Yemen in Group D.

The defending champion and top seed Mohammed Shehab had a tough time against his old nemesis Mohsen Bukshaisha of Qatar before salvaging a 4-3 victory in his first Group A encounter.

While Mohammed Shehab's performance was in his own words "below par", he can draw a few positives from the four-hour marathon.

Mohammed Shehab had merely been a pale shadow of the man who captured the gold medal at the 2007 Macau Asian Indoor Games and bronze medal at the 2009 Kaoshiung World Games in the first two frames, which he conceded to his rival.

He still succeeded in putting his act together and grabbed three frames on the trot to gain a 3-2 advantage. However, at that point, the match had to be halted to make way for the next session’s matches.

The break did affect Mohammed Shehab's concentration upon his return to table after a gap of almost two hours and he saw Bukshaisha take the sixth frame and tie the score 3-3.

In the deciding frame, Mohammed Shehab had to rally from more than 30 points behind and it was a brilliant show under pressure that carried the top-ranked UAE over the line.

UAE's young Khalid Kamali put up a brave fight in his Group C opener with experienced Qatari Ahmed Saif but went down 4-2.

The reigning world amateur snooker champion Hossein Vafaei of Iran also showed class in routing Mohammed Al Shaikh of Bahrain 4-0, while Omar Alkojah of Syria hammered Kamal Al Dubai of Yemen 4-0. Habib Subah of Bahrain was also in great form as he defeated Ahmed Sarhan of Saudi Arabia 4-1 and scored a 132-point break in the process.

The opening round matches in the 9-ball pool competitions also got underway on Saturday. The early round games for both snooker and 9-ball pool singles continue on Sunday with the first session starting at 10 am at the same venue.

Snooker singles, first round

10 am session:

Mohammed Al Joakar (UAE) beat Mahmoud Shehab (Yemen) 4-0

Ehsan Hyderi (Iran) beat Yousaf Al Foori (Oman) 4-0

Mohammed Shehab UAE) beat Mohsen Bukshaisha (Qatar) 4-3

Ahmed Saif (Qatar) beat Khalid Kamali (UAE) 4-2

1 pm session:

Hossein Vafaei (Iran) beat Mohammed Al Shaikh (Bahrain) 4-0

Omar Alkojah (Syria) beat Kamal Al Dubai (Yemen) 4-0

Habib Subah (Baharin) beat Ahmed Sarhan (Saudi Arabia) 4-1

Concorde Fujairah Hotel on Cue for International Billiards & Snooker Champs

At the Press Conference this week introducing the Second West Asian Billiards and Snooker Championship (14-20 January 2012), Mohamed Fekry (pictured), General Manager of the Concorde Fujairah Hotel, explained why he was proud that the Concorde was selected as the venue for the international sporting event.

Community Support

Mr. Fekry elaborated, saying:

“Like any business the Concorde needs to be a profitable organization but we are also here to serve and support the community. We have a growing record in hosting events and conferences for community groups and this is a direction we must continue to pursue.”

Popularity of Billiards and Snooker

The General Manager of the Concorde continued:

“I came to know by chance that billiards and snooker [together] is the second most popular game that is played in the UAE, as per the number of participants. This includes not only the top class players who will be coming here to compete on Saturday but ordinary people who play in public rooms of the UAE every night of the week.”

“We want to be involved in enhancing the popularity of this sport through providing an excellent venue for this international competition and a wonderful sporting spectacle for those who will come to watch.”

Spacious Facility

A third reason Fekry gave for his pride at hosting the sporting event was because of his facilities that provide an ideal venue for many major sporting events:

“In addition to the five-star rooms and service we provide for the players and spectators who will stay in our hotel we have the well-known Layalina Ballroom—‘the biggest ballroom on the UAE East Coast’. This is in high demand for social events, weddings and conferences due to its elegant design and its capacity to accommodate over a 1,000 people.”

“The Layalina Ballroom is, as we speak, being furnished with a large number of billiards and snooker tables. In addition, small grandstands are being erected to ensure there is ample room for spectators to get wide and high views of the action on and around every table.”

The Layalina Layout

While the Layalina Ballroom is one huge room the layout (pictured below) is such that it can be divided with moveable partitions to form three separate rooms.

At the Second West Asian Billiards and Snooker Championship at the Concorde Fujairah Hotel the ballroom will be kept as one big room but spectators will be able to move between the three areas. One area will be devoted to billiards, the second to snooker and the third room will be for the players to practice.

More information on the timetable, the players and the competition draw will be posted on Fujairah in Focus as it comes to hand.

Who’s Winning and Losing the Supermarket Price Wars in Fujairah?

Landscape Changed

When Carrefour opened the first of its two projected stores in Fujairah on 15 December 2011 the supermarket landscape in the eastern emirate changed dramatically.

To lure customers through its doors Carrefour launched a Christmas/New Year bonanza claiming, between 15-24 December, ‘Festive Feasts at Low, Low Prices!’

The campaign, which also included massive specials in the electronics department, seemed to work and on the opening day shoppers could be seen wheeling giant flat TV screens out to the car park in their supermarket trolleys and huge discounts especially on electronic goods.

Lulu Counterattack?

Early in the New Year, after the Carrefour novelty was wearing off it seemed that the Lulu Hypermarket in Fujairah was throwing a counterpunch. From 8th January Lulu produced the first of several editions of its brochures claiming (between 8-17 January) an ‘Offer Like Never Before’.

The advertising magazine highlights big specials on televisions, home theatres and cameras with ‘Free Discount Vouchers’, ‘Happy Hour Specials’, ‘Product of the Day’ and ‘Bundle Offers’. The first floor supermarket also had some fruit and vegetable products at greatly reduced prices.

Lulu staff played down the price war claiming that the specials in Fujairah were also available in all their other stores and that their ‘One Festival Many Offers’ campaign is normal in January and is a promotion timed to coincide with the popular Dubai Shopping Festival.

Comparing Prices

Newsglobe recently reported (9 January 2012) on a price comparison survey of UAE supermarkets. They compared a basket of food and other household products at these eight stores—Waitrose, Choitrams, Spinneys, Emirates Co-op, Hyper Panda, Lulu Hypermarket, Geant and Carrefour.

In this basket-sized UAE survey Carrefour offered the best value for money, followed closely by Geant, however, in some items other supermarkets were more competitive.

Customers Win

While Carrefour emerged as the winner of this latest contest in the UAE, it is certain that in Fujairah the customers are the real winners that have resulted from the increased competition.

The competition is sure to increase as the supermarkets (including Carrefour) at the Fujairah City Centre open in the first quarter of this year (May?) and Lulu opens its extended supermarket and mall at the end of the year (possibly in November 2012).

Losers?

Spare a thought for the losers—the small ‘supermarkets’ on the corner of your street who have little advertising power, who give surprisingly low prices, who offer free and personal home delivery and quite possibly are still open when the big hypermarkets have closed their doors.

13 Countries to Compete in Billiards and Snooker at Fujairah Concorde Hotel

Concorde Location

The spacious ballroom of the Fujairah Concorde Hotel has been selected as the venue for the Second West Asian Billiards and Snooker Championship from 14-20 January 2012.

High Participation

The number of participating countries in the upcoming Second West Asian Championships has received a boost and has now gone up to thirteen with the late entries submitted by Lebanon, ensuring a 100 per cent representation of the region in the event.

This was announced by the UAE Billiards & Snooker Association Secretary-General Sultan Al Joakar (pictured in centre) at a well-attended press conference on Tuesday at the Concorde Fujairah Hotel, the venue for the tournament.

Apparel Group Chairman Nilesh Ved (left) and Mohamed Fekry (right), General Manager of the Concorde Fujairah Hotel also addressed the press conference in their capacity as sponsor and host of the tournament.

60+ Contestants

The championships being sponsored by Club Apparel will see more than 60 top players from the 13 West Asian nations compete for the gold medals in the snooker singles, snooker team and the 8- and 9-ball pool singles events.

The participating countries are Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Yemen and the hosts United Arab Emirates.

Fine Emirati Players

Sultan Al Joakar, conveying his thanks to Club Apparel for sponsoring the championships, told the media that UAE have two very good players in Mohammed Shehab and Mohammed Al Joakar, who have served the country very well for many years.

"It will not be an easy outing for us," he said, adding: "The competition at this level of the sport is getting tougher and tougher with the passage of time.

"We are not expecting any easy games and we are not going to take the things lightly as well. Players from the Iran, Iraq, Qatar, Bahrain and Syria have all improved a lot over the past few years.

"The UAE won the snooker top honours at the inaugural West Asian Championships in Saudi Arabia last year, which makes us the pre-tournament favourites but this can put players under pressure as well.”

"We have seasoned campaigners like Mohammed Shehab and Mohammed Al Joaker and hopefully they will deliver the goods."

Strong Field

The Iranians are likely to put up a tough challenge having in their ranks the reigning world amateur champion Hossein Vafaei Ayouri. Iraq and Bahrain are both fresh from capturing a gold medal apiece at the 2011 Arab Games in Doha and Syria are also capable to springing surprises in any given encounter.

The members of the UAE snooker team for the West Asian Championships are Eissa Ali Sayed, Salem Ali Salem, Khalid Kamali, Ahmed Abdul Qader, Abdur Rahman Saif and Abdullah Al Attar. The members of the UAE pool squad are Salah Al Rimawi, Hani Al Hori, Ali Saeed and Amin Fikri.

This Press Release was written by Hanif Hassan.

Peter Brook Accepts Invitation to Attend Fujairah Monodrama Festival

Rendez-Vous in Paris

Renowned theatre director, Peter Brook, recently welcomed a delegation from the Fujairah Culture and Media Authority to the Odeon Theatre in Paris.

The Fujairah delegation included Mohammad Saeed Al Dhanhani, Vice Chairperson of Fujairah Culture and Media Authority and Chairperson of the Fujairah International Monodrama Festival and Mohammad Saif Al Afkham, Director of the 2012 Fujairah International Monodrama Festival and Secretary General of the International Theatre Institute (ITI). Tobias Biancone, Director General of the ITI was also present.

Purpose of the Visit

The visitors were in Paris to deliver in person an invitation to Peter Brook to attend the Fujairah International Monodrama Festival in January 2012 and be honoured as the first recipient of the Fujairah Award for Excellence in Theatre.

Peter Brook warmly accepted the invitation to the festival and the award ceremony and said that he was honoured to be the first recipient of the award.

Brook expressed his happiness with this award that “carries with it joy in light of all the defeats that the world is currently facing.”

The theatre director also shared his hope of conducting a theatrical workshop in Fujairah alongside the festival, as has been his practice at festival visits.

Fujairah Festival Well Known Internationally

Brook pointed out that Fujairah and its international festival are well known in France and other countries he has visited because of the participation of international theatre groups and famous theatre personalities who have visited the eastern emirate of the UAE. He mentioned that he had heard good news from theatre artists who have visited Fujairah who have witnessed the development of theatre in the emirate, appreciated the beauty of the natural landscape and enjoyed the kindness and openness of its people.

Brook on the Mountain Tops

Peter Brook joked that he had never spent time in the middle of barren, bare and high mountain peaks and he dreams of spending a few nights in the mountains of Fujairah.

Theatre Between Mountain Peaks

He wished the Fujairah festival continued success and expressed the hope that it will stay as high as the mountain peaks from which it has started. “Theatre,” he said, “is an art that deserves to be at the top between mountain peaks.”

Successful Visit

Mohammad Saeed Al Dhanhani (pictured below), the head of the delegation, declared that the visit to Paris was a success as the legendary director affectionately accepted the invitation extended to him by the festival’s leadership.

Al Dhanhani enlarged:

“Peter Brook accepted the invitation to attend the award ceremony at the specified time. He chose to accept Fujairah’s invitation from other invitations that he has received and be honoured as one of the most prominent and controversial theatre directors in the world.”

Al Dhanhani explained that one of the many reasons why Brook chose to accept Fujairah’s invitation was to fulfill his wish to take a look at the Fujairah International Monodrama Festival which is the only one of its kind in the UAE and the Middle East.

The leader of the delegation declared that preparations are in full swing to welcome Brook as a high profile guest of honour of the Government of Fujairah. He pointed out that Brook was hoping to present a theatre show or a workshop at the festival but time was an obstacle and he promised to do it soon.

Knowledge of Arab Culture and Islam

Mohammad Saif Al Afkham (pictured below), Director of the Fujairah International Monodrama Festival, said that Brook amazed the delegation with his knowledge of Arab culture, Islam and his reading of the Holy Quran. Peter Brook is also interested in Arabic arts and he loves the voice of Um Kalthoum.

Al Afkham said that Simon, Brook’s son, will accompany his father to Fujairah and they will be joined by a group of his assistants. Al Afkham mentioned that Brook promised an artistic surprise to the monodrama festival’s guests but more will be revealed in the fullness of time!

Latest Preparations

During a meeting (pictured) held at the Fujairah Culture and Media Authority on 9 January 2012, the Public Relations Committee for the Fujairah International Monodrama Festival discussed the latest preparations for receiving guests and facilitating communication between guests, the festival’s management and the wider community.

Mohammad Saeed Al Dhanhani, Vice Chariman of Fujairah Culture and Media Authority and Chairman of the Festival and Mohammad Saif Al Afkham, Director of the Festival, were also in attendance.

Al Dhanhani summarized the reviews presented by guests of the previous festivals and asked the committee to do their best to provide the best services and facilities for the guests.

Khalid Rashid Al Dhanhani, head of the committee, briefed the meeting on the role of the PR Committee and the plans prepared to provide all means of communication support and secretarial services to the guests, media personalities and participating groups. The committee will also seek to provide transport and other services to aid the coordination and cooperation with the other committees of the festival. The PR Committee will continue to hold meetings to further discuss and decide on its tasks.

Disappointing Delays and Deadlines in Fujairah

What is it with so many shonky schedules and overdue deadlines?

The Century Mall was ‘Coming Soon’ to Fujairah six years ago.

Carrefour said it would open its doors in the Century Mall last July.

The Al Sharq Hospital was going to open last September.

The delays were endless for the new express road.

The oil pipeline, which was to start flowing in December 2011, is now due to begin operations in June 2012.

Why make unrealistic declarations when delays disappoint and signal an air of incompetence?

Much better to set a later date that allows for difficulties but engenders joy and bolsters confidence when the project is delivered on or ahead of schedule.

Take the New Highway AND the Old Road Between Dubai and Fujairah

Enjoy the wonders of the new highway but don’t forget to experience the delights of the old road between Dubai and Fujairah.

New Highway

There’s a lot to appreciate about the Sheikh Zayed Highway between Fujairah and Dubai that was opened in December 2011.

Many have written about the directness of the route, the speed at which one can travel and the reduced time that it takes to travel from one emirate to another.

The ease and speed is aided by the absence of heavy vehicles and quarry traffic and potentially the safety of travelers is enhanced, unless the express route is turned into a racetrack.

People have commented on the engineering marvels in carving out of the Hajar Mountains a dual carriageway, with three lanes in each direction, according to international standards. The new highway is bringing travelers closer to the beauty, the immensity and might of the mountains in ways that inspire awe.

Some, like Justin Thomas in The National, have delighted in the highway’s newness: “The surface, the markings and even the road signs are all deliciously fresh.”

‘No More of the Old Road’

Some of the many reporters trialing the new highway have dumped vitriol on the old Dhaid-Fujairah road. Mick O’Reilly of the Gulf News vented his spleen in this way:

“No more. No more running the gauntlet of over-eager fruit sellers hawking their mangoes at the Masafi Friday Market, waving slices at you from the end of paring knives, urging you to taste. No more stopping for roasted corn barbecued over charcoal grills, baskets of tomatoes and bags of limes.”

“And no more weaving across two lanes of traffic at the Souq Al Juma, as the market is locally known…. Thanks to the super fast new highway that officially opened on Saturday between Dubai and Fujairah, you hardly have time to peel a mango and eat it before you are on the east coast.”

In a dismissive flourish the Senior Associate Editor of the Gulf News concludes: “Who will miss that winding and dangerous road through the Souq Al Juma? Few, save for those in search of tomatoes, limes and mangoes.”

Treasures Old and New

Hopefully tourists and residents wanting to experience the treasures of the eastern emirate will decide to travel the old and new highways (and also other routes like the Kalba Mountain road that brings one to Fujairah via the amazing town of Wadi Helo).

Those who want to whiz to Fujairah and back only on the new Highway 84 will miss seeing the delights that the Dhaid-Fujairah road has offered to those who enjoy slow travel.

Why the Road Less Travelled Should be Taken

To take the old, slow Dhaid-Fujairah road no more is to miss out on an all-round experience of Fujairah.

Here are some of the highlights on this road that winds through the emirates of Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah:

Sharjah’s Desert Park, which includes the Wildlife Centre (the world’s largest collection of Arabian wildlife, all indoors so it is still pleasant to visit in the hotter weather), the Natural History Museum, the Botanical Museum and the Children’s Farm. The Sharjah Monument is on the other side of the Al Dhaid Road.

On the Dhaid road you can spot signs and centres that display key aspects of Emirati heritage including falconery, bee and honey shops, camel racetracks and date farms such as Al Hashmia where you can see a variety of dates sorted, washed and dried before you taste and buy.

At Thoban (the ‘craft capital of the Emirates’) you can watch traditional Arabic pottery being made at the Thoban Pottery Factory and visit the Al Nakheel Heritage and Craft Works where 85% of its stock is made from Al Nakheel—the common date palm.

Then there’s Masafi (the highest place in the UAE with its pure spring water and rich archaeological sites) and the much-loved Friday Market that offers a traditional bartering experience for such things as the cheapest carpets in the UAE, clay containers of every shape, an oud or some toy camels. This is so unlike anything shoppers might experience in a Dubai or Fujairah shopping mall and it is part of the authentic Arabic culture that most visitors to Fujairah appreciate.

The plant nurseries, the museum at Dhafta, the wadis, the chicken farms and the many roadside markets all contribute to an understanding of how people have survived in this region for hundreds of years.

Then there’s the historic fort at Al Bithna with its archaeological sites and some emerging tourist attractions such as a farm with camels, gazelles, birds and the finest Arabian horses to ride and admire.

So Full of Life

When the British novelist, Jeanette Winterson, wrote (in ‘Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?) about her childhood in Manchester, she compared the old market with the modern malls and she observed that the traditional market was so ‘full of life’. The old Dubai—Fujairah road may be slow but it is so full of life.

With 80% of the traffic that used to flow along the old road now using the modern highway one wonders how the artisans, mango growers, nurseries, honey shops and date farms are surviving?

With 80% of the former Dhaid road traffic now taking the new highway, the old road will not be as slow as it used to be.

All Round Experience

Use and enjoy the delights of the new Sheikh Khalifa Highway but also travel the old Dhaid—Fujairah road to give yourself an all round experience.
