It has been more than a year (April 2007) since a request was made to the Lulu Hypermarket in Fujairah to do away with plastic bags and replace them with green recyclable bags.
The Fujairah hypermarket is linked to the Lulu chain and the local manager assures me that the decision has been made and Lulu is awaiting the manufacture of a jute bag in India.
Plastic bags are a problem causing harm to land and marine-based animals. They take hundreds of years to break down.
Many countries are now using green bags. Customers don’t seem to mind purchasing them especially when a margin goes towards an environmental project.
See the news of some of the green supermarket bag campaigns around the world.
Ask for green bags when you go into shops and in this way foster a public awareness and a movement for change.
Pictured is one of the beautiful new bags that are now available from Magrudy’s Book Shops in the UAE. They are large, strong, they have comfortable handles and being made from jute, they are environmentally friendly and bio-degradable. The concept is to reuse the bags and by doing this customers collect loyalty points and cheaper books. They cost only Dh8.00
